November 15, 2005--

Cleveland, Ohio

Harolyn Smith was an audience member at Oprah Winfrey show on October 26, 2006 where she was asked if she was up for Oprah's challenge.

To her surprise, the challenge was to giveaway $1,000 by doing random acts of kindness for strangers.  She was loaned a DVD recorder to capture the moments so that selected scenes could be aired on a future Oprah Winfrey Show.

Oprah is calling it her "favorite giveaway ever," distributing one thousand dollars to over 300 audience members.

Harolyn, who is in the business of making money at La Tea Dolly, a first class tea party service for girls aged 4-11, accepted the challenge and proceeded to pay it forward in the Cleveland community.  She bought 20 adult and children's coats at a department store and then passed them out at a downtown shelter.  She paid for gas at local gas stations.  She tried to buy groceries, but the store refused to let her tape inside their store.  She bought Toys R Us gift cards to help parents with their Christmas shopping.  She contributed to a church's scholarship fund, and she contributed to the church's youth programs.  Finally, she completed all these tasks in a week's time.

Harolyn was inspired and plans to make buying coats for the homeless an annual event, and she has recruited her La Tea Dolly partners to help.
